12 Days Around Sabah
This trip offers a full introduction to all the important birding habitat found in Northern Borneo.
Day 00. Arrival in Kota Kinabalu.
Day 01. Early morning drive to the Rafflesia Forest Reserve (1.5 hr) where we look for montane birds usually not seen in Mt. Kinabalu – Bornean Leafbird, Bornean Bulbul, Cinerous Bulbul, Bornean Barbet, Mountain Barbet and others. In the afternoon we check out some of the birds found around Kota Kinabalu city.
Day 02. Today we drive to Kinabalu Park (2 hrs). Our lodge just outside Park HQ will be our base for the next 3 days.
The montane forest around Park HQ records 18 Bornean endemics including the Whitehead’s trio (Trogon, Broadbill, Spiderhunter), 2 Partridges (Red-breasted & Crimson-headed), the tiny Bornean Stubtail, the unfriendly Kinabalu Friendly Bush Warbler, 2 Laughingthrush (Bare-headed & Chestnut-hooded), Bornean Whistling Thrush, Everett’s Thrush, Mountain Wren Babbler, Mountain Blackeye, Bornean Forktail, Bornean Whistler and Eye-browed Jungleflycatcher, Black-sided Flowerpecker and Mountain Serpent Eagle.
Day 03 to 04. Depending on weather conditions, we can check out the other birding spots in the Park including the Mesilau station (upper montane) and Poring Hotsprings (lowland).
Day 05. We drive to Sepilok (4 hrs), home of the threatened Orang Utan. We explore the forest and trails around the Rainforest Discovery Centre which includes an elevated canopy walkway.
Day 06. Another day around Sepilok with the lowland forest birds. The big prize here is the Bornean Bristlehead, the only species in its genus.
Day 07. We drive to Bilit (3 hrs), along the Kinabatangan River, the longest in Sabah. Our lodge is located just by the river bank, from which we make trips on a open topped boat. Highly sort after birds include the Bornean Ground Cuckoo, Storm’s Stork, Hooded Pitta and all 8 species of Hornbills found in Borneo.
Day 08 to 09. Still at Bilit. On one afternoon, we visit the Gomantong Caves where we can witness Bat Hawks and Peregrine Falcons attacking bats as they leave the caves at the end of the day.
Day 10. We drive to Lahad Datu, a bustling trading port (2.5 hrs) from where we take a dirt road into the Tabin Wildlife Reserve (1.5 hr). This reserve comprises both logged-over and virgin forest holding a full range of lowland forest birds and animals. On one of these nights, we will take a night drive on a open topped vehicle.
Day 11. Another day at Tabin.
Day 12. Last morning at Tabin. Afternoon we drive back to Lahad Datu airport for your flight (55 mins) back to Kota Kinabalu.
Tour ends.
